Second largest fortified church in southeast Europe
was built by the Teutonic Knights in the early 1200's.
The walls surrounding the church are 40 feet high
and 10 to 15 feet thick.

were added around 1525 and the second fortified wall was added
in the 18th century.

Villages With Fortified Churches in Transylvania
Seven of Romania's fortified churches and the villages surrounding
them were collectively designated a cultural world heritage site
by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) in 1993 because they provide a vivid picture of the cultural
landscape of southern Transylvania region of Romania.
