NAME: North Shore Cliffs National Natural Landmark
DESIGNATED: 1972
SIZE: 26,926 acres
OWNERSHIP: private and state
LOCATION: Molokai Island, Maui County, Hawaii
DESCRIPTION:
The major episode of volcanism creating Molokai is among the most ancient
in the Hawaiian Island chain. There are no finer exposures of
these ancient volcanic rocks than along the North Shore Cliffs
of this island. These cliffs and adjacent valleys and uplands
are therefore geologically significant. The physical features
of Molokai, including the North Shore Cliffs, are considered
to be of prime importance to geologists in piecing together
the story of how the Hawaiian Islands were formed.
