EDITION: 2nd Duke's OceanFest
YEAR: August 22-24, 2003 (Friday-Sunday)
LOCATION: Waikiki, Honolulu, South Oahu Island, Hawaii
2003 was the first year the celebration later known as Duke's OceanFest was a multiple-day event.
Old-Timers Beach Boy Celebration (3-5 pm)
Traditionally known as the "Hoohanohano Na Kanaka O Ke Kai,"
friends and fellow watermen of Duke gathered Waikiki at
Duke’s Canoe Club to share their stories about his life and times.
Lei Making and Dressing at Duke’s Statue (7 am-7 pm)
The public is invited to observe the beautiful island tradition of lei making by volunteers. Yellow centered plumeria are welcome.
Waikiki Historical Walking Tours
Special emphasis will be devoted to the stories and memories of Duke in the neighborhood where he grew up. Sponsored by the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association and Bishop Museum.
Surfboard Water Polo at Kapahulu Groin (10 am-2 pm)
Fun and exciting water polo – Hawaiian style – in the waters of Waikiki near the entrance to Kapiolani Park.
Dressing of Duke’s Statue (5-7 pm)
Duke is adorned in the colors of Hawai‘i in fresh flower lei, accompanied by Hawaiian music and halau hula performances.
Brunch on the Beach
Brunch at the Beach on Kalakaua Avenue (9 am-1 pm)
Start the day with island-style cuisine in a festive Waikiki block party.
Duke’s Ocean Mile Swim (9-9:30 am)
From Waikiki Beach, swimmers are invited to compete in the
waters where Duke honed his Olympian skills (Entry Fee: $20).
Waterman Challenge (9-11 am) (Download Application)
Six teams of watermen will compete. Teams from Honolulu City & County
Lifeguards and the Los Angeles County Lifeguards will compete in
swimming, paddle boarding, and canoe racing off Waikiki.
